The du’a of an ill person

What follows is a selection of ahadith – sayings of the Prophet Muhammed ﷺ (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) – that mention how the dua’s or supplications of a sick Muslim are answered by Allah (God).

Allah understands the pain, discomfort and anguish that illness can bring to a Muslim, but He is also the source of all comfort and ease. Certainly this is shown by how a patient’s du’as reach the heavens swiftly.

1. Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allāh be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said: ‘There are five supplications that are answered; the supplication of the oppressed until he is victorious, the supplication of the pilgrim until he returns, the supplication of the warrior (mujāhid) until he returns home, the supplication of the ill person until he is well and the supplication of a brother for his brother in his absence. And of these, the fastest to be answered is the supplication for the absent.” (Shuʿab al-Īmān).

2. Umar (may Allāh be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said: “When you visit an ill patient, then instruct them to supplicate for you, for indeed their supplication is like the supplication of the angels.” (Sunan Ibn Mājah).

3. Anas (may Allāh be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said: “Visit the ill and instruct them to pray for you. For indeed the supplication of the ill is answered and their sins are forgiven.” (al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ & Shuʿab al-Īmān).

4. Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allāh be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said: “The supplication of the ill person is not rejected, until he recovers.” (Ibn Abī Dunyā & al-Bayhaqī).
