Walking alongside bravery: My journey as a volunteer befriender with Safeena

Volunteering with Safeena as a befriender has been one of the most emotionally challenging & deeply rewarding experiences of my life. I began this journey with a mix of compassion and apprehension, often questioning whether I could truly make a difference or fearing that I might somehow fall short in supporting someone during such a difficult time.
Yet, it was through facing these doubts that I came to truly admire the extraordinary strength and quiet resilience so many individuals carry with them every day.
As a befriender, my role is simple, to be present. To listen, to talk and to offer companionship during what can be an incredibly isolating time. Sitting with someone in their darkest moments has reaffirmed my belief in the power of human connection.
What has struck me most is the remarkable courage people show—not only in facing their illness but in reaching out for support. It takes strength to admit you’re struggling, and even more to allow someone into that vulnerable space. Each time someone has invited me into their journey, I’ve felt deeply humbled and honoured.
Through this role, I’ve learned that offering support doesn’t always mean having the right words or solutions. Sometimes, simply showing up and holding space can make all the difference.
I’ve also seen firsthand that cancer does not define a person. The human spirit, even when tested by illness, remains resilient and beautiful. I’ve witnessed how our Islamic faith brings not only comfort, but an incredible sense of strength and unity during hardship.
Safeena has given me something precious: Hope. Hope that as a community, we can come together to support one another in ways that are meaningful, compassionate, and deeply rooted in our faith. Built on Islamic values, Safeena has been an answer to my own heartfelt duas during my darkest hour, at a time when there was no equivalent.
More than just a service, Safeena is a sanctuary—a spiritual and emotional harbour for those navigating life’s toughest storms.
To anyone considering volunteering, I can positively say, it will change you for the better. You’ll meet some of the most inspiring individuals you’ll ever know. Insha Allah, you’ll discover that sometimes, simply being there for someone is enough…
