Embracing Life’s Challenges: Pregnancy and Cancer

When I was 37 weeks pregnant, I received news that turned my world upside down – I was diagnosed with cancer. The fear that gripped me was unlike anything I had ever experienced before. It wasn’t just my life at stake; I was carrying a new life within me while also caring for my 22-month-old toddler. Facing these challenges required every ounce of courage and strength I had.
Battling cancer while dealing with postpartum symptoms was incredibly draining. Words cannot fully capture the exhaustion and pain I endured.
The physical and emotional toll was immense. Days stretched into nights where I couldn’t eat or drink anything because of the side effects. Holding my newborn often proved too much for me, leaving me feeling helpless and robbed of the joy these moments should have brought. My children were my lifeline, giving me the strength to persevere through the toughest days. Despite the relentless strain, I pushed myself daily to be there for my children in whatever capacity I could. It pains me to recall the times I missed with my toddler – precious moments that are lost forever.
My husband’s support and encouragement provided me with hope and great comfort, though the journey was difficult for him as well, he kept things stable at home when everything else seemed so uncertain.
During this time, my family, who lived three hours away, took turns staying with me during treatment. My mum stayed up most nights to help with my newborn and would often pop her head into my bedroom to check on me. They did more than help with daily chores; they brought a sense of normalcy and comfort to my days, providing a crucial distraction from the pain and fatigue that consumed me.
One of the most painful but valuable lessons I’ve learned is that challenging times truly show you who is willing to stand by you. This knowledge is invaluable; it teaches you where to focus your energy. Above all, remember that Allah loves us and has gifted us with strength and resilience. Have sabr (صبر) (patience), for this is a test, and with patience comes great reward.
During one of my quiet moments, the idea for my jewellery business, came to me. I was always someone who was independent, but suddenly, I couldn’t continue with anything. This left me feeling down and helpless. Starting my own business felt like a way to take back some control and do something good. It took my mind off the daily struggle and helped me feel somewhat normal again.
To anyone facing similar difficulties, I want to say: you are not alone. The journey might seem dark now, but there is light at the end. Don’t hesitate to reach out for support—talk to loved ones, join a support group, or engage in activities that bring you joy. Even the smallest steps forward are victories.
